WyoFan: Hi Brother knights,
Unfortunately, I won't be here while this chat goes live, so I am submitting my post in advance. I just wanted to say that for me, charity is my one area that I need to work on. I do charity works throughout the year, but being a college student and having a part time job, its hard to put in the time necessary for a good charitable work. I do what I can with the time that I have left (after exams, essays, etc). And Charity comes in many shapes and sizes. They can come in persons helping out, monetary donations, or prayer. Hope this discussion goes well, and I look forward to the next discussion.
God Bless

Jake, nSJ: Hello!

• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Jake, nSJ: Charity is a perfect topic for St. Valentine's Day, especially since the true meaning of the day has kind of been lost in the shuffle!

• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Jake, nSJ: It looks like everything is working! Unfortunately, I'll only be able to participate for 15 more minutes or so before heading off to dinner!

• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Admin: Yes, sorry about the technical glitch. I hope we didn't lose anyone. Maybe expect a little bit more of a delay in posts showing up for a bit. Good to see you, Jake.

• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Jake, nSJ: For me, charity is all about love of God, love of neighbor and love of self (and usually in that order!). St. Ignatius said that man is created to praise, reverence and serve God, much like Jesus speaks of love of God being the greatest commandment, as well as love of neighbor.

• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Jake, nSJ: Charity, then, can be simplified to one question, "How can I best love God?" This is a good question to ask if you struggle with charity, or, you might just remember the Golden Rule and ask, "What would I want someone to do to/for me?"

• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Jake, nSJ: Another thing that helps me in efforts to be charitable is to always recall the charity of God, and how much He has given us. The example of Jesus is always good to keep in mind, too, and for more reasons than just charity!

• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Admin: It appears that a lot of people either have dates tonight or gave up online chats for Lent! Thanks for all your input, Jake. I know that many visitors come back to read the transcripts, so I'll try to supply some material for them, too. One timely item is the upcoming release of the supreme knight's new book: A Civilization of Love. More about that in a minute.

Jake, nSJ: Seems like it! Well, in any case, I have dinner waiting for me. Take care, and I hope everyone has a blessed St. Valentine's Day!

marriedtobill: Happy Valentine's Day! Love, me

• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Admin (marriedtotoni): I believe we've met. Do you come here often?

• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

gogiants: I think charity has been overly tied to monetary gifts. We must always remember to thank those who _act_ in the spirit of charity. In our busy lives, charity can simply be a gift of our time!

• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Admin: Yes, gogiants, and I know that many Knights are giving the gift of time at charitable activities and council events tonight. The members of Council 750 in Oxnard, California, are hosting a Valentine's Day dinner and dance, which will begin in a little over an hour. And Council 1905 will hold a Valentine's Day dance tomorrow in Gretna, Louisiana.

Admin: Carl Anderson's book can be ordered by using the link in Knights in Interaction. Also in March, the supreme knight will be hosting an online chat (at the Supreme Council's Web site) about the pope's encyclicals, including his first one: Deus Caritas Est (Latin for "God Is Love").
